Our search for a kidney

Hey everyone! Dan and I finally decided to set up a blog to let everyone know how we are doing and to give everyone updates on the transplant. First off, since today is Valentines Day we would like to wish everyone a very Happy Valentines Day. Thank you so much for everyone who has been so kind and generous to us. We love you all and appreciate your friendship. For those people who dont know, in March of last year, Dan got very sick and the doctors informed us that he would need another kidney transplant. He was in and out of the hospital pretty much the whole summer with many different problems as a result of his kidney not working. This was a very stressful time for us and we incured much debt from the hospital bills which we are still trying to pay off before we get more bills from the transplant. He started going to dialysis three days a week down in Salt Lake. Dialysis is a process that cleans the blood for people whose kidneys are not working. At the very end of the summer we finally got started on finding a donor for Dan. His brother Devin was the first person to be tested and he was a match, but when they mixed thier blood together Dan's blood attacked Devin's. This happpened because Dan has had two tranplants and so he has built up a strong immune system which is great because he rarely gets sick, but not good in this situation. The next person to be tested was my brother Tim who was not a match for Dan. The next person was our brother-in-law, Riley, who had the same problem as Devin, Dan's blood just attacked his, and then Dan's aunt Jane was tested who had the same problem as Riley and Devin. The doctors told us that we needed someone who was not related to Dan or related to any of the other potential donors. When I told my dear friend Kaelea this news, without hesitation she said that she wanted to be tested. We had the papers sent to her, she filled them out quickly and went in to testing a few days later. After so much disappointment we asked the family to fast for us, and only three days after the testing we found out that Kaelea was a perfect match for Dan. This was the best news that we could hear! Throughout this whole process we have learned so much about Heavenly Father's love for His children. Just when we thought we couldn't handle any more disappointment, Heavenly Father sent us the miracle we truly needed!
Kaelea has passed her second round of tests and we only have one more day of testing left and that will be Wednesday of next week. Wow! Words cannot express my love and appreciation for my dear friend Kaelea who has been so patient throughout this whole testing process and for her willingness to give a part of herself to my husband Dan.

  1. Happy Valentines Day back! It truly is a blessing to have friends like you do Emily; I guess it's because you are such a good friend yourself.
